Running (K)Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 9300

We have two of these machines here, both now running Kubuntu-5.10 "Breezy".
After a few tweaks, everything works, including the SD-slot and the WiFi LED!

See also: The latest collection of 2.6.20 kernel patches for use with this machine.

Download the two missing files from Breezy's
version of KDE-3.5.2, required to Configure Konsole:
/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_konsole.la
/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_konsole.so
(Read more about this issue in the Ubuntu Forums).

Fix .flac support in the latest Amarok using packages from this posting.

Hardware Specifications of this Inspiron 9300:

Hardware Components
Status under Linux
Notes
Pentium M 760 2.0 GHz CPU,
Intel 915PM Sonoma Centrino chipset
Works No special procedure required during installation.
17" WUXGA TFT Display 1920x1200 Works Select Laptop LCD Display in Installer.
ATI X300 128MB PCIe Video Works Using stock X.org drivers, automatically set up during Ubuntu installation. ATI binary drivers also work, but interfere with suspend/resume (to RAM).
2048MB 533Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, 2-DIMMs, dual-channel Works Default Ubuntu -i386 kernel supports only 1GB max, so after installation I used the package manager GUI to install the -i686 version of the Ubuntu kernel to use the full 2GB of RAM.
100 GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive Works Note: this is a regular IDE (PATA) drive, but it is accessed as /dev/sda (SCSI) through the libata ata_piix driver.
High speed USB2
Works
Nothing special
Firewire IEEE-1394
Works
Nothing special
ACPI Power Management
Works
Suspend/Resume (to RAM) works, Hibernate works, Speedstep automatic frequency/voltage stepping works, automatic ACPI power-saving (C1-C4) works, automatic CPU throttling, laptop-mode works (with fixes below).
Standby & Hibernate buttons
Working
See notes below.
Integrated Network Card Works If DHCP autoconfiguration fails at install time, just hit "back" and try again. This is due to a bug in the kernel driver, whereby the card always fails for the first five seconds of operation, and then works fine thereafter. The latest kernels now include my fix for this problem, and speed up subsequent system boots by five seconds each time.
NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A
Works Appears as /dev/scd0. Kernel hack was required to eliminate random system crashes when drive is empty (the latest kernels now include this fix). I also upgraded the drive firmware to a modified version 2.03D for (much) faster DVD-Video ripping and region-free DVD playback. The latest Dell machines now use a different drive (newer model) than this one.
Intel Wifi A/B/G wireless
Works Using latest ipw2200 kernel driver. Ubuntu includes an old version of this that works, but you may need to do "modprobe ipw2200" before use. B & G modes work fine (WEP, WPA, WPA2). 802.11A mode not tested.
Sound system Works Kernel drivers automatically configured during installation. But I did also have to add snd_pcm_oss to /etc/modules to get the /dev/mixer etc.. to show up for compatibility.
Front-panel media buttons
Working
Mapped using xmodmap, handled by kmilo.
Bluetooth wireless
Works
Installed Bluez, can web surf from my PalmOne Zire72, and can communicate transparently to external serial devices using AIRcable Serial Adapters.
SVGA (analog) output Working The stock X.org radeon driver fully supports cloned and dual-head modes. See "man radeon" for details. My /etc/X11/xorg.conf file now includes settings for the analog (SVGA) output at resolutions up to 1600x1200, so that it can drive a projector in cloned mode, or a second analog monitor in dual-head mode).
DVI-D (digital) output Working The DVI-D output just plain works, but only acts as a clone of the built-in LCD. So for dual-head mode, a second display must use the analog (SVGA) output instead of the nicer DVI-D.
S-Video output Not used. Works only with the ATI binary drivers, which I don't use.
Secure-Digital (SD) card reader Works! Driver available in patch form from this link. These patches are also now included in my collected kernel patches.
80 WHr Lithium-Ion Battery Works Full battery monitoring/status. Gives 3+ hours on battery with backlight at mid-brightness.
Internal 56k Modem Works
Requires HSF (softmodem) driver from http://www.linuxant.com

This laptop is operating (very well!) under Linux Kernel version 2.6.16 + patches.
